HFC-227ea, also known as FM200, is an odorless, colorless halocarbon in a gaseous state. It is primarily used in two key applications: as a clean agent in fire suppression systems, and in pharmaceutical metered dose inhalers such as those used for dispensing asthma medication.
As a clean agent in fire suppression systems, HFC-227ea is effective against Class B, Class C, and electrical fires. Extinguishing a fire requires a concentration between 6.25% and 9% in an occupied space without mandated egress time, or up to 10.5% for a limited time. This upper limit is set because the NOAEL (No Observed Adverse Effect Level) indicates that FM200 becomes toxic at concentrations reaching 10.5%.
Because HFC-227ea lacks chlorine or bromine atoms, it does not harm the ozone layer, with an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) of 0%. Its atmospheric lifetime is between 31 and 42 years.
